If you or our your child plans to intend day camp or take lessons, here is some information which will be helpful for you. All individuals who ride should have a shoe or a boot with a small heel. You do not need to purchase boots specifically designed for riding (although if you continue to ride, you may wish to invest in a pair at some point). Your shoes should have a smooth sole as well a small heel. This is for safety reasons. The price of riding boots varies widely, but synthetic riding boots are available for as little as $30, making them quite affordable.
Helmets are provided by Spruce Meadow Farm. If you wish to purchase your own, you must select a model which is ASTM approved. Students will not be permitted to ride without an approved helmet. Helmets vary in cost; you can expect to pay $30-$50 dollars for a good approved helmet. Bike helmets are not acceptable riding gear; nor are riding helmets which are more than five years old (the materials can degrade over time, reducing their protectiveness).
You do not need to purchase riding pants; any full-length pant is acceptable. We do not recommend riding in shorts or capris, as the saddle and stirrups can cause painful rubs on your legs.
For those attending day camp, you should bring a camera (disposable is fine) to take pictures for your craft. Also bring a lunch or snack. Don't forget water, especially if it's hot out. You may wear shorts when you are not riding, so feel free to bring a change of clothes. A bathroom is provided for easy changing.
